This first novel is a tale of growing up a mathematical prodigy in Cardiff Wales with traditional Indian parents. When Rumi ‘s gift for math is first noted, her father considers Mensa but decides to tutor her himself. When her father starts to prepare Rumi for the A level exams at age 14, she develops an addiction to cumin seeds which she hides everywhere. She is accepted to Oxford before her fifteenth birthday. A good look at the burdens and costs of being gifted. Nominated for the Booker award.

For another take on growing up gifted but with a lighter and more successful approach see the Swiss German movie Vitus. The child star is himself a prodigy.
