Guy Mattison Davenport (November 23, 1927 \u2013 January 4, 2005<\/a>) was an American writer, translator, illustrator, painter, intellectual, and teacher.<\/p>\n Library thing <\/a> Davenport was a model of intellectual independence, adopting nobody\u2019s theories and toeing nobody\u2019s line (when he wrote that Levi-Strauss was too original of mind \u201cto be the exponent of a master or a school,\u201d he might have been referring to himself.
