First Love<\/p>\n

They say
\n the first love’s most important.
\n That’s very romantic,
\n but not my experience.<\/p>\n

Something was and wasn’t there between us,
\n something went on and went away.<\/p>\n

My hands never tremble
\n when I stumble on silly keepsakes
\n and a sheaf of letters tied with string
\n \u2014 not even ribbon.<\/p>\n

Our only meeting after years:
\n two chairs chatting
\n at a chilly table.<\/p>\n

Other loves
\n still breathe deep inside me.
\n This one’s too short of breath even to sigh.<\/p>\n

Yet just exactly as it is,
\n it does what the others still can’t manage:
\n unremembered,
\n not even seen in dreams,
\n it introduces me to death.<\/p>\n
