Goodbye by Robert Creeley<\/a><\/p>\n

Now I recognize
\nit was always me
\nlike a camera
\nset to expose<\/p>\n

itself to a picture
\nor a pipe
\nthrough which the water<\/p>\n

might run<\/p>\n

or a chicken
\ndead for dinner
\nor a plan
\ninside the head<\/p>\n

of a dead man.
\nNothing so wrong
\nwhen one considered
\nhow it all began.<\/p>\n

It was Zukofsky’s
\n“Born very young into a world
\nalready very old…”
\nThe century was well along<\/p>\n

when I came in
\nand now that it’s ending,
\nI realize it won’t
\nbe long.<\/p>\n

But couldn’t it all have been
\na little nicer,
\nas my mother’d say. Did it
\nhave to kill everything in sight,<\/p>\n

did right always have to be so wrong?
\nI know this body is impatient.
\nI know I constitute only a meager voice and mind.
\nYet I loved, I love.<\/p>\n

I want no sentimentality.
\nI want no more than home.
