An Evening with Peter Hutton – At Sea

Declared the best avant-garde film of the decade, At Sea is ambitious and profound. A haunting meditation on human progress charting the life-cycle of a colossal container ship from creation through destruction, with a voyage across the Atlantic in between. The film will be screened in its true 16mm format, and will be followed by conversation and audience Q&A with the artist. This film is a part of the Film Form/Film Art series.

  • The Draem master:The stories of Arthur Schnitzler, the amoral voice of fin-de-siècle Vienna.
    By Leo Carey

“Anatol” established Schnitzler as the sardonic, amoral voice of his generation.

Meanwhile, as he entered his forties, the pace of his sex life was becoming a little less frenetic. In 1903, he married Olga Gussmann, an aspiring actress and singer twenty years his junior, with whom he had a son and a daughter. The Schnitzlers became part of the Viennese cultural élite, in which, it seems, everyone knew everyone. Gustav and Alma Mahler were friends, as were Stefan Zweig, Bruno Walter, Felix Salten, and Franz Werfel. The satirist Karl Kraus was an enemy.

Brave and Bold, Lee Bontecou is Formidable at 84

Happy birthday Lee Bontecou, she is 84 years old.

  • Bontecou does not care what you think

She doesn’t want to impose. She’s probably most closely allied to the abstract expressionists because she acknowledges when she was a young artist [during] the heyday of the abstract expressionists, she admired not only their work but the idea of freedom and experimentation that their work embodied and the way they lived their lives. They weren’t theorists. They didn’t talk about their work. It was intuitive. She still doesn’t want to really talk about her work. She doesn’t want to fix meaning. She wants to keep it open for people.

Politics to Literature – Neo Realist Filmmaker Francesco Rosi Dies at 92

    Saturday, January 10th, 2015
  • Francesco Rosi, a filmmaker who was fascinated with power, poverty and politics, and whose commitment to social issues made him a direct heir to the traditions of Italian neorealist cinema of the postwar years, died on Saturday in Rome. He was 92.

    Senses of Cinema: Rosi

    Fancesco Rosi

His 1979 film Christ Stopped at Eboli won the Golden Prize at the 11th Moscow International Film Festival.[5]

Rosi’s films always appear to have political messages, especially his work from the 1960s and 1970s. As he matured as a director his topics for films became less politically oriented and more angled toward literature. Despite the more traditional slant of his later work, Rosi continued to direct until 1997. The 58th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival in 2008 played tribute to Francesco Rosi by screening 13 films in its Homage section, the latter being reserved to filmmakers of outstanding quality and achievement. He received the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement on 14 February 2008, accompanied by the screening of Salvatore Giuliano.

  • Sergei_Parajanov

(January 9, 1924 – July 20, 1990) was a Soviet film director and artist who made significant contributions to Ukrainian, Armenian and Georgian cinema.[1] He invented his own cinematic style, which was totally out of step with the guiding principles of socialist realism (the only sanctioned art style in the USSR). This, combined with his controversial lifestyle and behaviour, led Soviet authorities to repeatedly persecute and imprison him, and suppress his films.

  • MISSION SAN XAVIER DEL BAC was founded in 1692 by a Jesuit missionary, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. It was then that he became the first non-Indian to visit the village of Wa:k, or “Bac,” as he wrote it.
