It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Kim Guiline (1936-2021) who passed away on the 12 August, last Thursday in Paris.
Kim Guiline, the master of Korean abstract art, consistently pursued awareness of the surface through 50 years his oeuvre. Kim also encouraged spectators to actively participate in his perceptual activities, and suggested the act of looking at the works as a kind of meditation beyond mere encounters with paintings.

Anri Sala was born in 1974 in Tirana, Albania. He lives and works in Berlin,
Sala’s transformative, time-based works are constructed through multiple relationships between image, architecture and sound, utilizing these as elements to fold, capsize and question experience. His works investigate ruptures in language, syntax, and music in order to validate or invalidate narrative and composition, inviting creative dislocations which generate new interpretations of history, supplanting old fictions with new, less explicit, and less duplicitous ones.

Gego – Autobiography of a Line (2015)

After the Betty Parsons exhibition in 1971, Gego did not have a solo exhibition in New York again in her lifetime, and her oeuvre remains largely unexamined in relation to the constellation of international artists of the time. She spent the majority of her later years at her studio in Caracas, working on a series of works called Tejeduras (weavings), which will also be on view in Autobiography of a Line.

Gertrud Louise Goldschmidt (1 August 1912 – 17 September 1994), known as Gego, was a modern Venezuelan visual artist.[1] Gego is perhaps best known for her geometric and kinetic sculptures made in the 1960s and 1970s, which she described as “drawings without paper”

A leading figure of Venezuelan abstraction of the 1960s and 1970s, Gego (Gertrud Goldschmidt) was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1912, and graduated with a degree in engineering and architecture from the University of Stuttgart in 1938. With the advent of World War II, she migrated to Venezuela, settling in Caracas in 1939.

Louise Fishman – Artforum (Obit)

Louise Fishman, whose process-based large-scale abstractions draw on queer, feminist, and Jewish cultures, died early July 26 at the age of eighty-two. The news was confirmed by New York gallery Karma, which represents the artist. Often working with a grid motif, Fishman melded gestural abstraction with geometric minimalism to create densely layered and textured paintings that appear as if they had been built or woven. From the massive, energetic oil-on-canvas works for which she became known in the 1970s and ’80s, to the small-scale watercolors of recent years, her entire body of work radiates emotional intensity.

For a series begun in 1973, known as “Angry,” Fishman reflected on her own frustration with a patriarchal world that oppressed women by scrawling the names of famous women above abstract backgrounds. One in shades of beige and blue referring to the actress Marilyn Monroe reads “ANGRY MARILYN”; another is filled with crosshatched green strokes and alludes to the poet Gertrude Stein reads “ANGRY GERTRUDE.” Still others refer to Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia founder Ti-Grace Atkinson, the dancer Yvonne Rainer, and Fishman herself. She returned to the series in 2008 for a related body of work called “Serious Rage” that picks up the 1973 series’ themes for a new era, focusing on modern-day figures like Hillary Clinton.

After River’s death, Van Sant offered him a meaty role in the black comedy “To Die For,” co-starring Nicole Kidman and Matt Dillon. It was Joaquin’s first role in four years.
Twenty-three years later, Van Sant and Joaquin Phoenix are together again in “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot,” a film about the late quadriplegic cartoonist John Callahan, who lived in Van Sant’s hometown of Portland, Ore.

Dennis watched in horror as Jimmy took off his boots and climbed into a bronze casket. He crossed his arms and shouted, “Shoot.”
Dennis refused, saying that it was in bad taste, and suggested Jimmy get out of the casket before someone came in.
Implicit in the series of photos was Jimmy’s dark side, coupled with his desire to be close to his mother, who had died when he was nine years old.

Kurt Tong

1977, born in Hong Kong, China

Kurt Tong graduated with a Master’s degree in documentary photography at the London College of Communication in 2006. Having grown up in the United Kingdom, his work revolves around exploring his Chinese roots, his upbringing and understanding of his motherland. Using multilayered narratives, his recent work has dealt with the Asian Diaspora, Chinese funeral practices and early Chinese feminism.

Much of Kurt’s work, whilst deeply rooted in photography, has incorporated other mediums, performative elements and audience participations. Pushing the possibility of photography as a narrative tool.

He dedicated an exhibition at the Hauser & Wirth Gallery in Los Angeles to Ornette Coleman, describing him as “the Duchamp of music, the one who changed everything”.[3]
Another one of Hammons key influences is the French artist Marcel Duchamp. Hammons has described himself as the head of the ‘Duchamp Outpatient Clinic'[7] and the company that owns his Yonkers Gallery is called ‘Duchamp Realty
